The Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects your jaw to your skull. If it becomes damaged it can cause temporomandibular disorder (TMD) which can be caused by stress or teeth grinding.
You may have TMD if…
• You have pain or soreness in your face, jaw, or in or around your ears when you chew or open your mouth.
• Your jaw gets stuck open or closed.
• You hear clicking, popping, or grating sounds when you open or close your mouth.
• You grind your teeth.
If you suspect you have TMD or are displaying any or all symptoms come in for a consultation. TMD can cause health issues especially if you are grinding your teeth. We recommend you come in and have us help you relieve your pain and stress and supply you with mouth guards to protect your teeth when they are grinding. In most cases modifying your behavior can help TMD but in severe cases, surgery is required, so don’t wait.
For many people, a misaligned jaw is normal and can cause soreness and pain in the morning and during the day. The correction for this problem is a procedure known as an occlusal adjustment. This will align a smile that may be affected by crowding, shifting, or missing teeth and cause your bite to meet perfectly and comfortably. Luckily, the procedure causes little pain and discomfort, utilizing only a few tools and mouthpieces to protect and relax your jaw. If your teeth are shifting, or you grind your teeth and are missing any, call us and set up an appointment.
Many people across the world have the common problem of grinding their teeth. However, many people may not know that they have this problem if they only do it at night. A telltale sign that you may grind your teeth at night is if you wake up in the morning and your jaw and mouth are very sore and tired. This can break down your teeth and cause irritation to the gums the solution to this is a night guard, which is very similar to a mouth guard for people who engage in contact sports.
This night guard will be custom fitted to your teeth and can last up to ten years. It will act as a barrier between your teeth and protect them from that pesky grinding at the night, ensuring safety and protection. You can try to combat teeth grinding by cutting back on caffeine, chewing gum, and drinking alcohol.
