Over time, our teeth begin to weaken and become more susceptible to problems like decay, cracks and discoloration. If you feel your smile isn't what it should be, crowns can help improve your smile. If we notice that a tooth is decayed or seems weakened or cracked, filling or bonding may not be sufficient. A crown may be the best solution.


Types of Crowns

There are several types of crowns, including full porcelain crowns, porcelain fused to metal crowns and full gold crowns. Together, we'll decide which of these options is the most appropriate for you. You can be comfortable knowing that your new crown will be virtually unnoticeable, and will flawlessly complement the rest of your smile.


The Procedure

Installing a crown takes 2-3 office visits. On the first visit, the tooth will be reshaped. We'll file down the enamel so that a new crown can be placed over it. You will be given a local anesthetic to keep you from experiencing any discomfort. Once the tooth has been reshaped, a mold will be made of that tooth and the surrounding teeth. This mold will then be sent to our dental lab so that your new crown can be created. Before leaving, we will fit you with a temporary crown to wear until your permanent crown is ready.

The crown takes 2-3 weeks to be created. When you come back, you will again have a local anesthetic to numb the area. Then, your new tooth will be attached by using a very strong cement to make sure it stays in place.

When you look in the mirror, you'll see that your old smile has returned! Crowns are durable and will usually last about 10 -15 years. Care for it as you would any of your other teeth, with regular brushing and flossing.
